Earlier this week, the union declared a strike against members of the Broadway League (the association that represents producers) on development of Broadway shows. These labs are similar to Workshops and Stage Readings, which are also covered by the Strike. Primarily, his strike is about pay for the actors who participate in Labs. Who does this strike affect? Only Labs, Workshops and Readings from members of he Broadway League are subject to the Strike.

The agreement, accepted by the WGA's ruling board over two weeks ago on February 10, provides writers with concessions on issues that fueled their strike. Writers on both coasts officially ratified the WGA's new pact with the major studios. These concessions include provisions governing writing for "new media" and a compensation structure for content re-used in new media. The three year deal runs through 2011. The writers ratified this new deal with over 90% in favor of the new agreement.

SAG Presidential Candidate: I'll Seek Strike Authorization Next Year if Elected

In an open conference call today, SAG VP and presidential candidate Anne-Marie Johnson said she will seek a strike authorization next year, before the mandated early negotiations next fall, if she’s elected. Johnson added that some people say her Membership First faction is strike happy. That’s seems to be a signal that she thinks a strike will be necessary to force renegotiation. In a phone call with a client last night, I was asked what I thought about the strike started by the Writers Guild of America that is now affecting the television industry. The strike says that they do if they are paid for it. Back in 1988, the television writers' strike cost the industry nearly $500 million in advertising revenue.
