Transportation strike could paralyze Hollywood

Digital Media Law

Believe it or not, Hollywood may be headed for another work stoppage in just two weeks. This time, the Hollywood Teamsters may strike - and that could immediately halt television and film production. For details, see my exclusive Hollywood Reporter story. In 2007-2008, the Writers Guild struck, shuttering television and film production. In 2008-2009, a Screen Actors Guild stalemate lingered for almost a year, shutting down primarily film production.

"Hollywood on Strike" Update

Digital Media Law

Check out my new book “Hollywood on Strike!,” In a strange twist, the book is now available on Kindle - but only on Amazon UK! The vagaries of Amazon. Americans can't buy from the UK store, so don't rush over across the virtual pond. But it should be available soon in Kindle in the U.S., and also on Google books (compatible with Nook, apparently). And, of course, the paperback is available on Amazon U.S. and Createspace (see below).

The new contract takes effect August 1 and runs for three years, as is usual with Hollywood labor agreements. The 15 Hollywood-based IATSE locals covered by the contract encompass over 35,000 members.

Hollywood Labor: The Tyranny of Time

Digital Media Law

One key to understanding Hollywood labor is a tool that was invented thousands of years ago: the calendar. I covered those events as they occurred, and they’re also the topic of my forthcoming book, “Hollywood on Strike!,” This may be the only place in Hollywood labor where negotiation is explicitly reserved to the CEOs, rather than the AMPTP—whose entire purpose is, after all, to negotiate labor agreements.
