Great news – my new book, “Hollywood on Strike!: The book chronicles the 2007-2009 Hollywood labor disturbances – the WGA strike and the SAG stalemate – and tries to make sense of them. It’s a big book – about 477 pages of text plus another hundred pages of reference material.

DGA to Negotiate on SAG & AFTRA's Heels

The DGA contract (like those of SAG, AFTRA and the WGA) expires in mid-2011, but the DGA always negotiates early. If they don’t, the DGA will step in and do a deal first, setting a template that SAG and AFTRA may not like. Indeed, the announcement also says that the DGA will engage in informal discussions with the AMPTP before mid-November, which will prepare the DGA to do a deal promptly before the holiday season sucks the wind out of the town.

It’s expensive to administer and is an invitation to conflict as platforms such as new media evolve. Yet we need residuals, because talent survives on these payments between gigs. The DGA has essentially never gone on strike, and AFTRA seldom does.) That offer, in turn, is essentially the same as the new media provisions that the DGA, WGA, and AFTRA (in two separate deals) agreed to. And, of course, with mid-2011 expiration dates set for the WGA, DGA, AFTRA (two deals) and new SAG deals, negotiations will start again in the towards the end of next year. I covered those events as they occurred, and they’re also the topic of my forthcoming book, “Hollywood on Strike!,” DGA Moving on: In mid-November, the DGA will begin formal negotiation of their film and television agreements, which also expire June 30. The creative rights aspects of the DGA agreements will be negotiated at the same time, but directly with the studio CEOs. Last negotiating cycle, for example, the DGA and AMPTP held just five days of formal bargaining.

Slumdog has already won DGA, SAG, PGA and Golden Globe awards, and is a multi-award favorite for the Oscars. Slumdog Millionaire continued its winning streak this awards season, with Simon Beaufoy winning the 2009 Writers Guild of America award this evening for adapted screenplay.

However, another factor is the DGA. At that point, the DGA may step in and do its deal – just as it did in January 2008, after the WGA failed to do a deal (and remained on strike) in fall 2007. With SAG negotiating in fall of this year, and the DGA negotiating most likely in January or so of 20111, I’m guessing the WGA will play a less central role this time around, but that could easily change. The key difference is the contract expiration date, which in the current deal is synchronized with the WGA, AFTRA and DGA (mid-2011). SAG and AFTRA announced yesterday that their combined paid-up membership, about 132,000 members, overwhelmingly ratified the contracts between the unions and the advertising industry. The result was expected, as there was no organized opposition.

Another tough area for SAG is its relationship with talent agents: SAG’s been without a “franchise agreement” with the agents association since 2002, while AFTRA, DGA and WGA all have such agreements in place. The referendum on the proposed contract between SAG and the studios began yesterday, as ballot packets were mailed to about 110,000 paid up members of the Screen Actors Guild.

The ballots for SAG’s recently approved TV/theatrical contract won’t be going out until mid to late May, a source tells me, several weeks later than the early May target that the Guild stated as recently as a week or so ago.
