Oscar Rule Change: Ten Best Lists
Anyway, the Academy already had one flop musical on this year's list -- which also tended to exclude Paramount's costly, bawdy but mostly tone-deaf PAINT YOUR WAGON. Paramount and Motown were extensively tub-thumping LADY SINGS THE BLUES (which did get five nominations), but I think Diana Ross rightly got most of the attention from that.

The good news is that other film funds do not and will not require market capitalization to this extent.

Interdependence Day
With the box office success of Slum Dog Millionaire , indie films are the new darlings of the movie business after decades of being relegated to the wilderness of limited theatrical distribution and even more limited marketing budgets. There’s been quite a bit of up-selling of independent pictures in Hollywood. Warners is not alone.

The use is non-commercial (it is purely political); NPR's work is factual, not fictional; the portion used is brief; and such a use will have no significant effect on the market for NPR's work. Protecting [one's] reputation" is not a cognizable copyright interest, at least in the US, where we don't recognize moral rights. See 17 U.S.C.

LAFF: Keynoter Stern Lays Out Indie Landscape
When the financial crisis hit, any awards that independent films were winning suddenly were not enough to appease corporate paymasters, who in turn severely damaged labels like New Line, Warner Independent, Paramount Vantage, PictureHouse and so on. Those markets used to be the backstop of smaller films. Patrick is absolutely right.
