Indie Studio Combine Announced
The DFIS advisory board includes Ben Silverman, Co-Chair of NBC Universal; David Wiederecht, President of Investment Strategies and Chief Investment Officer for GE Asset Management; David Spieler, Global Head of Duff and Phelps Technology and Entertainment Practices; and Oscar-winning actress Tilda Swinton. That's not what this is.

Grey Gardens: HBO Event
These days, many of the people who aren't interested in what's playing at the multiplex are checking out the new movie opening on HBO instead. Ignore the adult audience and they'll get out of the moviegoing habit, rent DVDs and subscribe to HBO. It might have worked better on HBO, where it could have had the courage of its convictions.

Sundance Watch: Trouble the Water Heroine Makes Music
Shortlisted for the documentary Oscar, Trouble the Water was one of last year's Sundance breakouts. Rivers debuted her music in Trouble the Water, and is releasing an album in April to coincide with its HBO release.

Santa Barbara Fest Screenwriters Panel: Stanton, Black, McCarthy, Knott
knew we'd have a lively panel because we had two actor-writers--Tom McCarthy (who also directed The Visitor) and Robert Knott (Appaloosa) as well as writer-director Andrew Stanton (Wall-E, nominated for 6 Oscars, including original screenplay), who is one of the most entertaining guys around, and young Dustin Lance Black (nommed for Milk).

Golden Globes: Slumdog Wins All

WGA Awards Fete Slumdog, Milk, Mad Men, 30 Rock
Slumdog has already won DGA, SAG, PGA and Golden Globe awards, and is a multi-award favorite for the Oscars. Milk has won SAG and PGA awards and is also a strong Oscar contender in multiple categories. Dustin Lance Black won the award for best original screenplay for Milk. Of course, the visiting actors attracted most of the attention.

DreamWorks Seeking New Distrib Deal
After Thursday night's pre-Oscar Frost/Nixon celebration at L.A.'s But DreamWorks was asking for more, and when they were not able to score the terms of their old HBO deal, Universal would only give up a few slots to Spielberg and Snider--not the six a year they needed.
