SAG-AFTRA Ratify Advertising Agreement; SAG Townhall Features Fireworks
The news from the TV/theatrical side is nowhere near as placid. The key difference is the contract expiration date, which in the current deal is synchronized with the WGA, AFTRA and DGA (mid-2011). The result was expected, as there was no organized opposition. About 28% returned their ballots, about typical. That’s a bit surprising.

SAG Executive Director: TV/Theatrical Deal Will Pass
Another tough area for SAG is its relationship with talent agents: SAG’s been without a “franchise agreement” with the agents association since 2002, while AFTRA, DGA and WGA all have such agreements in place. Circling back, I saved the toughest question for last: what if the TV/theatrical agreement fails to pass? non-interim) NED job.

SAG’s Thaw
Variety ’s Dave McNary reported that the Screen Actors Guild’s national board just approved a tentative two year deal on its film-TV contract, triggering a ratification vote by the guild’s members on June 1st. The terms of the new deal are generally the same as those the networks and studios agreed to with the WGA, DGA and AFTRA.

SAG & Studios Agree to Tentative Deal
The Screen Actors Guild and the AMPTP (alliance representing studios and producers) reached tentative agreement on a two-year TV/theatrical contract, potentially ending a ten-month stalemate that halted production of most studio movies and put thousands of people out of work. The gain—synchronicity—came at a price to SAG, however.

SAG TV/Theatrical Ballots Later Than Expected; SAG Litigation Continues; and More
The ballots for SAG’s recently approved TV/theatrical contract won’t be going out until mid to late May, a source tells me, several weeks later than the early May target that the Guild stated as recently as a week or so ago. BTW, a copy of the proposed TV/theatrical agreement is available here. It’s expected to pass easily. What next?

SAG Contract Graveyard
AFTRA, DGA and WGA all have franchise agreements in place. TV/Theatrical Agreement (expired June 30, 2008). TV Animation Agreement (expires January 15, 2008). Where do SAG contracts go when they expire? Who knows, but wherever it is, it’s getting more crowded by the day. This is the agreement between the talent agents and SAG.

SAG: No Good Reason to Strike
SAG Statement : “Will a SAG TV/Theatrical strike ‘shut down the Industry?’ The email goes on to say that “jobs in commercials, basic cable, video games and industrials would continue during a TV/Theatrical strike.” In addition, Internet projects involve far fewer actors and far lower pay than film or TV projects. NO WAY !”

What Does the Internet Mean for the Movie Business?
The debates have been especially fierce in the context of the SAG stalemate, since compensation and residuals are much lower in new media, and union jurisdiction more limited, under the model proposed by the studios to SAG and adopted by the DGA, WGA, AFTRA and the IA. Rather, it’s number three behind trailers and TV spots. SVP of U.S.

Cracks In The Veneer
Guild leaders recently withdrew their animation and reality TV proposals. Since the AMPTP closed their deal with the DGA, the parties can now use the material terms of that agreement as a template for their own negotiations and adjust their respective expectations to those deal points in which there is a real prospect for consensus.
