Here's the new poster for Jane Campion's Bright Star , which will follow its strong Cannes debut with likely September fest appearances in Telluride and Toronto. This critic-friendly film is a soft lob down the middle for Academy voters, methinks--as long as Berney & Co. What do you think? But if anyone can do it.

Hurt Locker, Other Award Pics Directed by Women
The movie has a shot at one of ten slots in the wide open Oscar best picture race. Aside from critics' raves, The Hurt Locker boasts other advantages in the Oscar race. Also, the film industry, well aware of the failure of every Iraq War film to date, has been waiting for the exception that would break through and reach audiences.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Sid Ganis has another surprise up his sleeve: Thursday he's going to promise that the Oscar show to be broadcast on ABC will not be longer this year, even with ten best picture nominations instead of five. Oscar bloggers will likely see a boost in Oscar ads too.

There's considerable uncertainty heading toward Cannes this year. If this year's Cannes marketplace reflects anything about the state of the business, it's that the industry is constantly shifting. It snapped up a whopping 16 films out of Cannes last year for U.S. So far Leigh has nabbed six career Oscar noms.

Oscar Watch: Nine Films Make Foreign Shortlist; Gomorra Does Not
The Oscar foreign film short list is solid, but there's one glaring omission: the Italian entry Gomorra. But so was Gomorra, a tough slice of real Italian gangster life which was probably too violent for the foreign branch and must have split the exec committee, which added three other films to the final list of nine.

Cannes master promoter Thierry Fremaux knows what he is doing: the photo taken from the Debussy stage of the Cannes press corps wearing 3-D glasses will be seen everywhere. At a time when other distribs are treading cautiously, steady Cannes buyer Sony Pictures Classics bets on their own taste and gut instinct for what they can achieve in the marketplace.
