SAG Stalemate Update
Causing the stalemate is the issue of contract expiration date rather than new media; there’s talk of a trade-off between this issue and the (unrelated) SAG demand for force majeure payments per the previous SAG agreement. SAG-AFTRA Ratify Advertising Agreement; SAG Townhall Features Fireworks
SAG and AFTRA announced yesterday that their combined paid-up membership, about 132,000 members, overwhelmingly ratified the contracts between the unions and the advertising industry. The ballots went out a few days ago—they’re due back June 9—and SAG’s conducting a series of town hall meetings across the country. Well, why not?

SAG’s Strange Voyage
It was as though 5757 Wilshire, SAG’s national headquarters, somehow disappeared into the black hole that features so prominently in (spoiler alert) the latest “Star Trek” movie. Unfortunately, SAG’s governance structure ensures that there will always be too many starship captains on the bridge at once. The quiet was deceptive however.

Hollywood Labor: SAG Source Says a Strike Unlikely, Joint SAG-AFTRA Bargaining Likely; and the Year Ahead
A SAG strike in the upcoming negotiating cycle is “difficult to envision,” a source from SAG’s moderate faction, Unite for Strength, told me, though he/she cautioned that avoiding one will require that management negotiate reasonably and he/she wouldn’t take the strike option off the table (as, indeed, no union could). 2) Basic Cable.

WGA Awards Fete Slumdog, Milk, Mad Men, 30 Rock
Slumdog has already won DGA, SAG, PGA and Golden Globe awards, and is a multi-award favorite for the Oscars. Milk has won SAG and PGA awards and is also a strong Oscar contender in multiple categories. Dustin Lance Black won the award for best original screenplay for Milk. Of course, the visiting actors attracted most of the attention.
