WGA Deal (Pretty Much) Closes. Now Let The Healing Begin.
The WGA’s rank and file must approve the new contract (though it appears that the strike will be called off while the details are worked out). The most notable deal points are the WGA’s exclusive jurisdiction over the Internet and cell phones, a residual kicker in new media reuse fees and separated rights.

SAG & Studios Agree to Tentative Deal
The deal will probably be approved by the SAG board today or tomorrow and ratified by the membership by mid-May, but the hardline MembershipFirst faction has vowed to fight the deal, so ratification, although likely, is not assured. The new deal compromises the force majeure claims SAG has pending from the 2007-2008 WGA strike.

The Guild’s negotiators took on that challenge and, despite the producers’ demand that the Guild simply withdraw all the claims without payment, our negotiators achieved a settlement of the claims that results in significant payments to series regulars who were affected by the WGA strike. Talent Agent’s chilling “State of the Industry” message sends shivers through entertainment industry
The glimmer of good news is that this presents terrific opportunities for independent filmmakers, provided they’ve got courageous investors on board. Talent agent James J. What that leaves for aspiring actors, and the thousands of established actors who’ve worked only occasionally Jones warns, is even fewer opportunities.
