Those talks involve both SAG and AFTRA, negotiating together once again after a bitter hiatus in the last negotiating cycle.

DGA to Negotiate on SAG & AFTRA's Heels
The Directors Guild announced on its website today that it will begin negotiations with the AMPTP (studio alliance) in mid-November, which is immediately after the scheduled end of 45 days of negotiation between the AMPTP and SAG (Screen Actors Guild) & AFTRA (a smaller performers union). SAG, AFTRA and the AMPTP declined to comment.

Hollywood Labor Returns to Moderation
As early returns from the SAG National Board elections come in this week it looks like a turn to moderation in the Hollywood guilds after several years of more aggressive policies by both actors and writers. SAG & Studios Agree to Tentative Deal
The deal will probably be approved by the SAG board today or tomorrow and ratified by the membership by mid-May, but the hardline MembershipFirst faction has vowed to fight the deal, so ratification, although likely, is not assured. SAG’s Thaw
Variety ’s Dave McNary reported that the Screen Actors Guild’s national board just approved a tentative two year deal on its film-TV contract, triggering a ratification vote by the guild’s members on June 1st. The terms of the new deal are generally the same as those the networks and studios agreed to with the WGA, DGA and AFTRA.

SAG-AFTRA Ratify Advertising Agreement; SAG Townhall Features Fireworks
SAG and AFTRA announced yesterday that their combined paid-up membership, about 132,000 members, overwhelmingly ratified the contracts between the unions and the advertising industry. The key difference is the contract expiration date, which in the current deal is synchronized with the WGA, AFTRA and DGA (mid-2011).

Is SAG Becoming Irrelevant?
The resulting 2012 expiration date means that SAG would not be able to threaten a joint strike in 2011 with the WGA (let alone AFTRA) when those unions’ contracts expire. No More Sounds of Silence on the Music Composition Front?
An earlier bid to join the Writers Guild (WGA) apparently gained little traction. In other audible union news, AFTRA recently approved its interactive (i.e., Despite concerns with some aspects of the contract, that's unfortunate for SAG, because I'm told this sector is only about 25% unionized (AFTRA numbers + SAG's).

SAG: No Good Reason to Strike
12-13 SAG National Board meeting, reports the LA Times. The SAG leadership, which could have had a deal nine months ago, has instead stumbled from one ill-considered strategy to another, most of which involved attacking AFTRA in some way or another. It’s unclear why this would not also apply to shows signed to AFTRA after a strike.

Hollywood Labor: SAG Source Says a Strike Unlikely, Joint SAG-AFTRA Bargaining Likely; and the Year Ahead
